Things you buy through our links may earn New York a commission. Watchmen is interested in how we gaze upon the world and the world gazes back. Characters look upon masks the color of quicksilver, a body swaying from a tree, and scenes of untold violence, and are changed by what they see.
The series premiere, written by showrunner Damon Lindelof and directed by Nicole Kassell, is also interested in the lenses through which we view our world. The plays that challenge us. The films that enchant us. The television that lulls us.
A young black boy no older than 5 sits alone in a theater watching a Western with rapt attention. The live piano played by his mother carefully charts the ebb and flow of a tale with brief interstitial title cards, tight frame ratio, and broad, physical acting.
On the screen, a black hooded figure captures a scoundrel with panache. Then with grand gestures, he reveals himself to be Bass Reeves, one of the first black U.
Marshals who went on to have a lengthy, famed career working primarily through Oklahoma and Arkansas. The relationship between blackness and the screen has always been a fraught one for reasons of representation, industry, and aesthetics.
But here, in this sparsely inhabited theater, a little black boy finds wonder and hope on the screen. This, he must bear witness to as well. Placed in a box loaded onto a car, the young boy watches from a small bullet hole as dynamite rips through the building housing his parents, and darkness envelopes the screen.
The young boy wakes in a field surrounded by dead adults. The only other survivor is a baby he soothes as they head down the road to an uncertain future. Framing this alternate world with the true incident of the Tulsa race riots is a bold choice that immediately lays bare the concerns of Watchmen the series: racial violence, the long hand of history, power.
But the dynamics here are different. This black man is a cop. In this world — set 30 years after the events of the seismic comic by Alan Moore, Dave Gibbons, and John Higgins — cops wear yellow masks on the lower half of their faces to protect their identities, squid falls from the sky with no explanation, Robert Redford has been president for three decades, Dr.
Manhattan is still on Mars, and Rorschach has become a symbol for the white-supremacist terrorist organization the Seventh Kavalry. The terrorist the cop pulled over is wearing a Rorschach mask when he shoots the cop in his car, right at the moment his secured police gun is unlocked remotely. The cop barely survives the shooting, but the message is clear: After three years of peace, Seventh Kavalry is making its presence known, and cops are a target.
Though he made this decision in order for his friends to live the best lives that they can, they are currently trying to stop him. Eren has refused to stop and killed some of his former comrades in order to achieve his goal. As the manga approaches its final chapter, fans could not be more excited to see Eren fight the people he cares about more than anything else. There have been a lot of characters in the series.
Ymir Fritz is the most important of them all as none of the events in the series would have happened without her.
Deciding to use her, Fritz had Ymir help the Eldians and harm the Marleyans. Though she was no longer in the physical world, Ymir found herself in the unknown land, where her powers were used by her descendants for the next 2, years.
She was forced to create titans and had no free will of her own. Any Eldian could become one of these titans with many of the main characters inheriting at least one of them. Once someone inherits their powers, they only have thirteen years left to live, just like Ymir. Fritz and the Eldians fought against the Marleyans even before the Titans were around. However, once Fritz used the titans, he won his war. Years later, the Marleyans would get their revenge.
Those that remained were treated poorly and wanted the freedom that their ancestors stole from their enemies. Having the power to control the Eldians, Karl made those that joined him forget their history. Karl Fritz brought the Eldians to a small country known as Paradis. Wall Maria was the outer wall, which most of the lower-class citizens lived in. Wall Rose was beyond Wall Maria and Wall Sheena was in the center of Paradis, which was used to protect Karl and those that directly served him.
The Survey Corps was the group that the series revolved around. They would go outside the walls to fight and learn about the titans, hoping to find a way to get their world back. The Military Police Brigade devoted their lives to the royal family and only the top 10 soldiers of each class were allowed to join the MPs.
The Garrison Regiment protected the people inside of the walls. Though Karl was able to take away the memories of the Eldians, he was unable to make other races forget the history of the world. The Ackermans were a family that knew the truth and became enemies of the royal family. When Marley gained the majority of the Nine Titans, they offered Eldian families their rights if they had their child join the Warrior Unit and serve them. Annie, Reiner, Bertholdt, and Zeke were all from Eldian families and were forced to attack Paradis in order to save their families and bring honor to Marley.
When the Marleyans were figuring out who the Eldian Restorationists were, Zeke helped them catch his parents. For example, after Armin ate Bertholdt and became the Colossal Titan, he learned everything that his enemy had remembered. This is why Eren Kruger knew who Mikasa and Armin were despite neither of them being born yet.
Would you pick up a book series and start with the second one? Would you start a set of instructions on the second step? You have to start at the beginning. But more importantly, you miss the moments. If you start with the second season, you have to ask yourself, for what purpose are you watching the show anyway?
You miss the music, the animation, and the incredible voice acting. You miss the nail-biting cliffhangers, the heart-wrenching emotional bits, and all of the excitement and enjoyment that comes from watching any show.
Do you just want to know how it all ends? My 3-word thoughts on the anime: Epic, Dynamic, Masterpiece. The suspense build-up was absolutely amazing, yet there was still room for improvement; that shows just how epic this anime can get. The anime not only includes epic fights, but lots of dialogue, and for those of you that hate dialogue, I feel sorry for you people who only watch for action. The art and music can be described in one word: WOW!
The art drawings were absolutely stunning! The characters all had a unique aspect to them. The settings of the anime were beautiful. The cities and walls looked realistic, the plains that characters dreamed of seeing made me want to run outside to see for myself how beautiful nature really is, and how humans underappreciate the naturality of nature.
Of course, I may be overthinking things, but the anime certainly included some themes while creating this masterpiece of an anime. The aspect of being confined in an area, doing the same daily routine every day. People seek to be free and to seek adventure. Watch for this. Another theme that the anime incorporated was that of the cycle of life.
